While I waited in line, I noticed three kids in front of me. Couldn\u2019t have been older than twelve. They were counting coins, whispering, doing the kind of math you only do when every cent matters.<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay\u2026 we can share one sandwich,\u201d one of them said.<\/p>\n
Another nodded. \u201cYeah. That\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then the smallest one pointed at the cookie display.<\/p>\n
\u201cCan we get one cookie too?\u201d<\/p>\n
They counted again.<\/p>\n
Silence.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot enough,\u201d the oldest said quietly.<\/p>\n
Something about that hit me.<\/p>\n
So when it was my turn, I leaned toward the cashier and said, \u201cAdd a cookie for them. Put it on my order.\u201d<\/p>\n
The kids turned around, surprised.<\/p>\n
\u201cReally?\u201d one of them asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah,\u201d I smiled. \u201cYou deserve something sweet too.\u201d<\/p>\n
Their faces lit up instantly. You\u2019d think I handed them the world.<\/p>\n
But as the cashier rang it up, she leaned closer to me and whispered:<\/p>\n

I blinked. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n
Her eyes flicked toward the kids, then back to me.<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey come in here almost every night. Different people, different \u2018stories.\u2019 They ask just loud enough for someone to overhear.\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked back at the kids.<\/p>\n
Still smiling. Still excited about that one cookie.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re not homeless?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
She shook her head.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey live nearby. Parents pick them up later. We\u2019ve seen it. They\u2019ve figured out people feel bad for them.\u201d<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t know what to say.<\/p>\n
Part of me felt\u2026 embarrassed.<\/p>\n
Like I\u2019d been played.<\/p>\n
But another part of me looked at those three kids\u2014still laughing, still waiting for their food\u2014and felt something else.<\/p>\n
So I turned back to the cashier and said:<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n
She frowned slightly. \u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n
I nodded.<\/p>\n

Because whether they were struggling\u2026 or just learned how to survive in their own way\u2026<\/p>\n
They were still kids.<\/p>\n
