The priest stared at her in stunned disbelief.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou mean\u2026 there\u2019s still hope for us?!\u201d<\/p>\n

The nun nodded frantically and pointed toward the frozen sand where their supplies lay scattered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes!\u201d she cried. \u201cIf you stick that thing into the camel\u2026 we can finally use it to pump air into the mattress!\u201d<\/p>\n

The priest blinked.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026The mattress?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe air mattress!\u201d the nun shouted. \u201cWe\u2019ve been sleeping on the ground for three nights because neither of us could figure out how to inflate it!\u201d<\/p>\n

The priest stood there completely frozen.<\/p>\n

Then slowly looked down at himself.<\/p>\n

Then back at the nun.<\/p>\n

Then at the rolled-up camping mattress beside the dead camel.<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

A very long silence.<\/p>\n

Finally the nun frowned and asked:<\/p>\n

\u201cFather\u2026 what exactly did YOU think I meant?\u201d<\/p>\n

The priest\u2019s face turned so red it nearly glowed in the moonlight.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2014well\u2014I just thought\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

The nun crossed her arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou thought what?\u201d<\/p>\n

He opened his mouth.<\/p>\n

Closed it.<\/p>\n

Opened it again.<\/p>\n

Then finally muttered:<\/p>\n

\u201cI suddenly understand why the bishop sent me to the desert instead of the seminary retreat.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nun stared at him for three seconds\u2026<\/p>\n

then burst into laughter so hard she nearly fell into the sand.<\/p>\n
