“Trust me.”<\/p>\n
Two mornings later, the doorbell rang.<\/p>\n
My father calmly opened the front door.<\/p>\n
Standing outside were a real estate attorney, a property manager, and two movers.<\/p>\n
The attorney introduced himself.<\/p>\n
“Mr. Thompson asked us to meet him here today.”<\/p>\n
My in-laws exchanged excited glances.<\/p>\n
They obviously assumed the house was about to become theirs.<\/p>\n
Instead, my father handed the attorney a folder.<\/p>\n
The attorney smiled politely and announced,<\/p>\n
“As of this morning, ownership of this property has been transferred into the Thompson Family Living Trust.”<\/p>\n

The property manager explained that the trust also included funds for in-home caregivers, housekeeping, and maintenance, allowing my father to remain in the home safely for as long as he wished.<\/p>\n
The movers weren’t there to pack my father’s things.<\/p>\n
They were there to remove my in-laws’ furniture, boxes, and decorations.<\/p>\n
My father watched quietly as they carried everything out.<\/p>\n

“Was this your plan all along?”<\/p>\n
Dad smiled gently.<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
