It was 1:30 in the morning when Sarah suddenly woke up.<\/p>\n
She lay perfectly still, listening.<\/p>\n
Something had disturbed her.<\/p>\n
A faint sound.<\/p>\n
A creak.<\/p>\n
Then another.<\/p>\n
She slowly turned toward her husband, Mark, who was sleeping peacefully beside her.<\/p>\n
She shook his shoulder.<\/p>\n
\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n
He didn’t move.<\/p>\n
She shook him again.<\/p>\n
\u201cMark, wake up!\u201d<\/p>\n
He opened one eye.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n
Sarah whispered,<\/p>\n
\u201cI think someone is downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mark sighed.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI heard something.\u201d<\/p>\n
He reluctantly got out of bed, grabbed a flashlight, and headed downstairs.<\/p>\n
Sarah stayed under the blankets, listening nervously.<\/p>\n
A few minutes passed.<\/p>\n
She heard Mark walking around downstairs.<\/p>\n
First the kitchen.<\/p>\n
Then the living room.<\/p>\n
Then the hallway.<\/p>\n
Finally, he came back upstairs.<\/p>\n
He climbed into bed.<\/p>\n
\u201cNothing,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n
\u201cI checked everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sarah stared at him.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou didn’t check the bedroom closet.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mark frowned.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy would I check the closet?\u201d<\/p>\n
Sarah smiled nervously.<\/p>\n
Then she whispered,<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause that’s where the burglar has been hiding for the last twenty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mark froze.<\/p>\n
Slowly, he turned his head toward the closet.<\/p>\n
There was a long silence.<\/p>\n
Then came a tiny sound from inside.<\/p>\n
Creak.<\/strong><\/p>\n Mark’s eyes widened.<\/p>\n \u201cSarah\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhy didn’t you tell me before I went downstairs?\u201d<\/p>\n She shrugged.<\/p>\n \u201cI wanted to make sure you were brave.\u201d<\/p>\n Mark stared at her.<\/p>\n \u201cBRAVE?\u201d<\/p>\n Sarah nodded.<\/p>\n \u201cVery brave.\u201d<\/p>\n From inside the closet came another noise.<\/p>\n Mark grabbed the flashlight tighter.<\/p>\n Then he whispered,<\/p>\n \u201cOkay\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou go check the closet.\u201d<\/p>\n Sarah immediately pulled the blanket over her head.<\/p>\n \u201cI’m suddenly very tired.\u201d<\/p>\n Mark stared at her.<\/p>\n The closet door slowly began to open.<\/p>\n Both of them screamed.<\/p>\n Then a voice shouted,<\/p>\n \u201cPLEASE DON’T CALL THE POLICE!\u201d<\/p>\n Mark jumped out of bed.<\/p>\n Sarah screamed again.<\/p>\n The closet door opened fully.<\/p>\n A terrified man stepped out with his hands raised.<\/p>\n \u201cI wasn’t going to hurt anybody!\u201d<\/p>\n Mark stared at him.<\/p>\n \u201cYou’ve been hiding in our closet?\u201d<\/p>\n The burglar nodded.<\/p>\n \u201cFor twenty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n Sarah looked at her husband.<\/p>\n \u201cI told you!\u201d<\/p>\n Mark pointed at the man.<\/p>\n \u201cThen why didn’t you steal anything?\u201d<\/p>\n The burglar sighed.<\/p>\n \u201cI was planning to.\u201d<\/p>\n He looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n \u201cBut your wife woke up before I could.\u201d<\/p>\n Sarah frowned.<\/p>\n \u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n She looked at Mark.<\/p>\n \u201cWhy didn’t you hear him downstairs?\u201d<\/p>\n The burglar slowly raised his hand.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2026 actually came in through the bedroom window.\u201d<\/p>\n Mark stared at Sarah.<\/p>\n Sarah stared at the burglar.<\/p>\n Then she looked at her husband.<\/p>\n \u201cSo technically\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n She smiled.<\/p>\n \u201cI was right.\u201d<\/p>\n Mark sighed.<\/p>\n \u201cI’m never sleeping again.\u201d \ud83d\ude04<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" It was 1:30 in the morning when Sarah suddenly woke up.
